GCPS HEALTHSMART
OPT-OUT FORMS
It is about the sex education changes that start this Fall in Gwinnett County Public Schools. GCPS has eliminated Choosing the Best a sex education program that promotes the benefits of delaying sex until marriage and has reduced Gwinnett’s teen pregnancy rate by 81%. In its place, it has approved a sex education program called HealthSmart that promotes condoms and birth control to students, teaching them how to obtain them without parent knowledge and withholding their failure rates in preventing pregnancy and STDs. This will start this Fall. The good news is that parents have the legal right to opt their children out of this program as long as they do so in writing. The flyers explains what the changes are and how to opt children out. Students in 5th through 9th grades in all GCPS will be taught ALL of the new HealthSmart sex education classes unless their parents opt them out. If children take Health in the Fall, the opt out must be done in October, because the children will be taught sex education in November. Here opt out flyers in English and in Spanish that you can share with your church family. Thank you for your help to protect the children!
